An elasticated bottom hem also keeps the gilet firmly in place and keeps the elements out and close-fitting shoulders minimise speed-sapping flapping. The stretch fabric also maintains an efficient fit and still lets you move easily when on the bike. 

If you want to push the pace, then the lightweight mesh back ensures any sweat build up you generate has an easy escape route. Open slits in the armpits promote better ventilation and airflow too.  And with a two-way front zipper, you have complete control of temperature regulation while also giving easy access to jersey pockets underneath.
